A Blast From The Past - Old 27 Group Invades Alpena
Mon, 30 Aug 2010 3:41:35 EDT

The Old 27 Car Tour started to make it's way home and into the streets of Alpena Sunday.

Following a week long ride from Coldwater Michigan and overnite in Cheboygan Saturday, a good share of participants participated on the ride home along U.S.-23. Part of the day was spent at 40 Mile Point North of Rogers City and then the remainder of the afternoon in Alpena.

Craig Parrish, founder and show director says the annual cruise has also been part of a 3 year effort to make US-27 a state historic road which was formally announced this week in Lansing. Before the day's of freeways, Old 27 was a North - South connecter from Miami Florida to Cheboygan - like it's counterpart Route 66 that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. Now that it's gotten state recognition, as has been the case in Indiana, similar efforts will be made in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. Then an effort will be made to make it a national historic road where it would be available for federal tourism and scenic highway dollars.

"That means jobs, that means tourism dollars for all involved." he said.

It's the second year the group came to Alpena. Parrish noted of Alpena Convention Visitors Bureau Executive Director Deb Pardike "Deb does a great job, she's great to work with. It only makes sense to do US-23 as the ride home and Alpena is so receptive." Participants cheered as Pardike noted there would be more stores open downtown and a shuttle was available to take them to some local attractions.

And as many of the participants started to leave, many said they would definitely be back next year.
