August 9th, 2011 - Grayling, Michigan
A rolling celebration of Michigan's historic M-27 highway will take place 23 - 28 August with an estimated 150 to 200 cars from the 1950's and 1960's stopping in Grayling on Friday August 26th , after 4:00 P.M., for an overnight stop. They will have travelled on the Old 27 route from Coldwater, Michigan stopping along the way in Lansing, St. Johns, Ithaca, St. Louis, Clare and Harrison. The final stop on the trip will be Cheboygan.
Before construction of the interstate highway system drivers travelled North and South on what is known today as Old 27. Two lanes of highway that travelled town to town from the Michigan and Indiana border to the Straits of Mackinaw. There were no exits, the highway passed through the downtown area of each community. These were not car trips in that day as much as they were adventures which were measured in days instead of hours.
Local volunteer Sandra Moore stated "we are anticipating a larger crowd than last year with many cars bringing two or three passengers we could easily see 300 to 400 visitors". Pete Kocefas who has helped put the schedule together mentioned that "tour participants really appreciate Grayling closing down part of downtown and in so many words rolling out the red carpet.".
The cars will be arriving mid-afternoon Friday August 26th and be on display for several hours in the uptown area. The Just For Kicks a group of high spirited cloggers will present a 30 minute show at 5:00 PM in uptown Grayling. A street dance will be held from 8 to10 P.M... Please plan on a visit to see some special people and automobiles and to give our visitors a warm Grayling welcome.
